Evolve x Demi Lovato

May 07, 2013

Hey everyone! We were fortunate enough to get on a phone call with Demi Lovato yesterday to talk about her upcoming album release, as well as discuss her morals, struggles, and success. For only being 20 years old, her story is absolutely amazing. It's beyond refreshing to see someone so successful spreading such a positive message. We couldn't be more excited to welcome her into the Evolve movement.

E: Hey Demi! It’s great to have you with us for this feature. Thank you so much for finding the time. First off, let’s hear about you’re upcoming album release! What’s the story behind this record in a nutshell?

DL: Thanks for having me! But yes, my self titled album "DEMI" comes out on May 14th and is by FAR the best reflection of who I am as a person to date. I touch on some really heavy topics this time around, so I feel like this album is a definite step up for me musically and a great way to mature with my fans and open up to them about sides of me they've yet to meet.

E: Which song are you most excited for your fans to hear?

DL:
The song that stands out to me that I think fans will absolutely LOVE is Nightingale. It's one of my personal favorites on the album that has a really deep, personal meaning to me. Warrior is also one that I think fans will be in love with because I know I am... But I don't want to give away too much!!

E: You’ve made such a huge impact through encouraging your fans to love who they are and stay positive through their struggles – which is exactly what Evolve Clothing Co. is all about. It’s awesome to see how humble, grateful and true you’ve stayed through all of your success. What keeps you going when times get tough?

DL: No matter how cheesy or cliche this may sound, the things that keep me going are God, my family, my fans, and music. I have no idea where I would be had I not been in this industry with such an amazing fan base who supports me and loves me at my highest highs and my lowest lows and I don't even want to imagine it. I owe my existence to love, faith, and passion.

E: You travel the world, and have millions of people looking up to you at the same time. That’s got to be an amazing experience! What’s your favorite part of what you do?

DL: My favorite part of what I do is meeting my fans and hearing what they have to tell me whether it be their stories, how they became a fan, the praises... Its incredible. No matter if I've personally met these people before or not, my music and my story have and always will be there for them and hearing that what I do helps them and inspires them to be better will never get old to me. It truly gives me the chills.

E: What/who inspired you to make this your career?

DL: You know, I get this question a lot and I never know how to answer it...  My purpose in life is to make a difference in this world and having success is only a way to better put a message out there. I was born with a voice that needed to be heard musically and on a personal level. So, I'm a strong believer that this was all fate. It was meant to be the way it is.

E: You’ve been sober for a little over a year now – congrats, that’s awesome! What advice do you have for anyone who wants to, or is currently in the process of, taking on a challenge to better themselves?

DL: Looking back to when I was spiraling out of control with drugs and alcohol and an eating disorder and various other things, I want to kick myself because all I had to do was admit I had a problem and the opportunity for help was in front of my face... So my advice to those who are struggling with the same things I still struggle with is to speak up. Asking for help does NOT make you weak. Help is out there and recovery is possible. Please don't give up your fight.

E: What would you consider to be your biggest obstacle to date?

DL: Admitting I had a problem was one of the toughest things I've had to go through. Because my life basically unfolded in front of the world, I didn't want to sweep it under the rug and not tell my fans, the very people who were sending me letters and getting me through those three months in treatment, what was really going on with their so-called "idol." I wasn't going to be that person who hid their imperfections, but fessing up in front of the world about my self harm issues, being a bulimic, having depression and bipolar disorder, and the drug and alcohol problems I was facing behind their backs was extremely difficult at first. However, seeing how many people have stuck with me through the thick and thin has made it all worth it. Yes, I'm not perfect and I'm not claiming to be, but that's the thing with being a person: no one is perfect. No photoshopped magazine cover or edited vocal track will ever make anyone think I'm "perfect" and that's the way I want it to be. I just want to be me, and introducing the world to that side of me helped me finally get that acceptance I've always wanted.

E: You’ve seen our line - which Evolve design do you think represents you and your morals the most?

DL: The phrase "Create, Inspire, Evolve" represents who I am as a musician...... I create music solely to inspire those who listen. Each of those listeners have helped me evolve into a strong, independent, and confident woman that I never thought that I would be.

E: Let’s wrap up with a fun one. What is your most unforgettable (funny) moment on the road?

DL: Well... It's no secret that I'm not the most graceful girl in the world.... With that being said, I think I've fallen a solid 7 times while performing alone. It's gotten to a point where fans expect a few tumbles to be made. I mean, come on... It's not a fun tour until I eat shit onstage at least once.

E: Again, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us! Best of luck with the album release!

DL: Thank you SO much for the opportunity! I'm definitely looking forward to my little Evolve shopping spree. Xo
